What is the purpose of the medical volunteer experience program?
The goal of the program is to provide basic medical services to underserved communities, allowing you to gain valuable clinical experience while contributing to improving healthcare access in these areas. -
Where does the medical volunteer experience take place?
Our programs take place along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, in communities with limited access to medical services. -
What is the duration of the volunteer program?
The program duration may vary depending on the trip, but currently, we offer a 10-day program. We plan to offer additional program lengths in the future. -
How do I apply to become a volunteer?

Eligibility & Participation (Questions about who can apply and participation requirements)

Who can participate in the medical volunteer experience?
Participants must be 18 years or older. Although certain healthcare certifications or studies are an advantage, they are not required. You must also be proficient in either English or Spanish to communicate effectively with the team and patients. -
Is prior medical experience required to participate?
No, prior medical experience is not required. However, having a background in healthcare is considered an advantage, and will allow you to take on more responsibility during the program. -
Can I extend my volunteer commitment or participate in future opportunities?
Yes, we will be offering additional programs in the future. Once you're part of the MedEdQuest community, you’ll be notified of new opportunities and trip dates.

What support and training are provided to volunteers?
Volunteers will receive medical induction led by our lead doctor prior to engaging in clinical activities. You will also receive basic medical training to help you prepare for your work in underserved communities. -
Can I receive academic credit or certification for participating in the program?
Yes, each volunteer will receive an Accomplishment Certificate upon completion of the program. This certificate will include the accredited hours you’ve completed.

Are there any costs associated with volunteering?
The program is a self-funded experience, meaning participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, meals, and any additional personal expenses. These costs will be clearly outlined on our pricing page, and we strive to keep the program as affordable as possible. -
What is included in the program fee?
The program fee covers accommodation, meals, transportation during the trip, and on-site support. It is important to note that any personal spending (e.g., souvenirs) or international flights are not covered.

How can I prepare for the medical volunteer experience?
We recommend you:-
Bring insect repellent to protect against bites.

Get all recommended vaccines (CDC guidelines will be provided).

Pack any prescribed medications you may need for the duration of your trip.

Bring your own medical equipment, such as a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff (either analog or digital).

We take safety seriously. There will be a leader on-site 24/7 throughout the trip to ensure your well-being in case of any unforeseen events. In addition, our team is always available for support should you need assistance.

What impact can volunteers expect to make?
Volunteers will help improve healthcare access in underserved communities, contributing to better health outcomes. You’ll also have the opportunity to conduct health education sessions and learn firsthand about healthcare disparities. This hands-on experience will provide you with invaluable medical skills and cultural competency.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellation Period: Cancellations must be made in writing and received by MedEdQuest at least 65 days prior to the scheduled departure date.

Refund Policy: No refunds will be provided for cancellations made by travelers. However, in the event that the travel agency cancels the trip for any reason, travelers will be entitled to a full refund of all payments made or offered the option to reschedule for another available date.

Change Policy: Changes to travel dates or itineraries may be permitted subject to availability and additional fees. Please contact MedEdQuest for more information.

Health Insurance: All travelers are required to obtain appropriate health insurance coverage for the duration of their trip. This insurance must include coverage for medical emergencies, trip interruptions, and cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances. It is imperative that travelers ensure their health insurance policy provides adequate coverage for international travel.

Force Majeure: MedEdQuest reserves the right to cancel or modify a trip in the event of unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, including but not limited to natural disasters, civil unrest, or government advisories. In such cases, the travel agency will make reasonable efforts to provide alternative arrangements.

Travel Insurance: In addition to health insurance, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance to protect against unforeseen events that may result in trip cancellations or interruptions.
